Was/is religion necessary for people to cooperate?

Post by Nocbl2 on Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:05 pm

So my mom posed this question to me a few days ago. I would say yes and no, because while in some cases it unified people (like early Islam), it also led to disputes and divisions among groups of people (Iconoclastic period, Crusades etc.) Thoughts?

Religion will work for a while, but as time goes on the message gets more and more distorted and then that distortion causes schisms, and then we're right back where we started. So no, not in my opinion.

Yes because no group in the entire history of the entire world has ever functioned without the basis being religious.

No but all organized groups are bound by a central thought, idea or common goal. Organized Religion, Hate of Religion, Greed, Fear and Patriotism are several examples.

I could say some stuff here, but noc started the thread, so it obviously isn't worth perpetuating by responding to seriously.

we're considering religion as a unifying belief combined with ritualistic dogma, not simply a belief.

Religion neither harms nor helps people cooperate. People who cooperate likely would have with or without religion. People who do not cooperate likely would not have with or without religion.

I've cooperated with people my entire existence without believing in a Magical Fairy, hasn't stopped me so far.

Religion doesn't teach that, fucking kindergarten does.

Re: Was/is religion necessary for people to cooperate?

Post by Gauz on Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:24 pm

Religion is the set of beliefs concerning the cause and purpose of life, nature, and the universe.

That being said, I don't see why it'd ever be necessary for people to agree on that to work together. I don't think they have anything to do with each other.
Or at least, they don't have anything more to do with cooperation than agreeing on favorite hair color may.

If people disagree on religion, it might affect cooperation, but religion wasn't
necessary for people to cooperate. To be necessary means to be the most needed.

On SOPA: Very Happy

On-topic:

I'm thinking less of the is part of the question and more of the was portion, i.e. tribes like the early Arabs, or the Native Americans. I put in the is part in case anyone actually did think it was necessary in modern times.

It felt more like you were trying to make a point, but you probably know full well that you're preaching to the choir here.

On topic:
You would have to be a religious nut job to think that religion is necessary for co-operation. It is arguable whether religion helps or hinders co-operation but to say that co-operation can not (or would not) exist without religion is ridiculous.

I think all that religions do in terms of co-operation is create in and out groups, increasing co-operation with the in group but decreases co-operation with anyone of the out group.

You do realize that flagrant pirating like that is the reason SOPA has any chance of passing, right? If SOPA passes, I blame the true pirates just as much as I blame the government.

An argument that is invalid based on the fact that what you consider to be "worth buying" is affected by considering piracy an option in the first place.
